The timer starts with your first keystroke.

Type the displayed passage in order. Backspace corrects the last character. Paste is disabled. Escape pauses. Control or Command plus Enter restarts. Leaving the input pauses the timer.

How this data entry practice works

Choose stock records, order references or number strings. Read the sample, click the typing area, and copy every character in sequence. The test starts at your first character and finishes at the end of the sample. There is no fixed countdown. Backspace is allowed, and corrected mistakes remain in the accuracy calculation.

This is a text transcription exercise. It measures character accuracy and typing speed; it does not assess spreadsheet navigation, separate form fields, scanning documents or checking a source database. All supplied records are invented practice data. You can edit a passage before starting, but avoid entering private customer, employer or account information.

What to notice in each sample

In stock records, distinguish the letter O from the digit 0, preserve capital letters in codes, and include hyphens. In order references, keep the date in the displayed year-month-day order even if you usually write dates differently. In number strings, keep leading zeros and both decimal places: 00418 and 418 are different answers here.

WPM, KPH and accuracy measure different things

Typing Ground reports WPM using correct characters remaining in your answer, divided by five, divided by active minutes. The five-character word applies to codes and numbers as well as prose. Accuracy counts correct character attempts divided by all attempts, including mistakes you later correct. Time away from the typing area is paused.

Under the same character-count convention, 1 WPM equals 300 characters per hour, often described as keystrokes per hour or KPH. A 40 WPM rate converts to 12,000 KPH. That conversion does not mean you pressed 12,000 physical keys: Shift and Backspace are not added to the correct-character count. Our KPH calculator and scoring guide explains the difference.

A practical routine for numeric entry

  1. Begin with a slow number-string run and watch for missing zeros or decimal points.
  2. Review missed keys, then repeat the difficult group accurately.
  3. Change to stock or order records so you also practise reading context.
  4. Compare runs with the same sample and conditions. Keep unfamiliar-text scores separate from memorised ones.

For longer number practice, try the numbers challenge. To learn the top-row digits, use the number-row lesson. This test accepts a numeric keypad too, but it does not identify which physical keys you used or teach a particular ten-key finger layout.

Preparing for an employment assessment

Ask the employer about duration, scoring, corrections and required equipment. Some assessments count gross attempts, others report net characters or use error penalties. There is no universal passing WPM or KPH. A result here is a self-administered practice record, not a proctored certificate or proof of job eligibility. Follow the job typing test preparation guide for a routine you can adapt to the actual instructions.
