How to practise hyphenated words

Read both parts of the compound before starting. In these samples the hyphen has no spaces beside it. A keyboard hyphen is not the same character as a long en dash or em dash. This page gives copying targets rather than a complete guide to when words should be hyphenated.

What to check after a run

Watch for a space replacing the hyphen, two hyphens instead of one, or a missed letter immediately after it. Repeat the complete compound rather than only the punctuation mark when the transition feels awkward.

1. Find the pattern

well-lit room, part-time role, sign-in sheet, step-by-step guide, follow-up note. A short-term change appears on the up-to-date plan beside the check-in desk.

2. Connect the movement

Please use the sign-in sheet at the side-door entrance. The self-service station has a step-by-step note. A follow-up message will confirm the next small-group session.

3. Apply it in context

The team prepared a one-page handover for the evening shift. It included a well-marked floor plan, a check-in list, and a short-term storage note. Before leaving, each person read the last-minute changes and placed the up-to-date copy beside the desk.
