How to practise square brackets in references

The examples are fictional reference labels, not citations to real publications. Look for the opening and closing square mark around each number or word. Read what follows the closing bracket before typing on, since a space, comma or full stop may be next. Find the bracket keys on your own layout first.

What to check after a run

Review missing closing brackets and accidental round brackets. Text inside a bracket may contain capitals or digits; the enclosing marks do not change how those characters are scored.

1. Find the pattern

[Draft] [Review] [Final] [1] [2] [3] Read note [4], check item [8], and return to section [B]. Every opening square bracket needs its displayed closing mark.

2. Connect the movement

The folder labels were [Morning], [Afternoon], and [Archive]. A temporary note said [Room to be confirmed]. The editor left [check date] beside the unfinished heading.

3. Apply it in context

For this invented index, [12] identifies the room plan and [18] identifies the equipment list. The label [Updated] appears beside the newer copy. Read the bracketed reference carefully before opening the next file; a similar number can point to a different item.
